At Democracy Prep, our educators are transforming the lives of scholars every day by going above and beyond classroom instruction. They mentor, coach sports teams, and counsel young people.
One of those exemplary educators is Bronx Prep Principal Nikita Philpott, who combines her love of teaching and coaching basketball in her role as a school leader.
Last week, she got the surprise of a lifetime in front of a live TV audience of millions of viewers when she was invited to appear on ABC’s Good Morning America. Having been told that she was one of several educators being recognized on the show, host Sam Champion revealed to her live on air that she alone was being celebrated.
Philpott’s aunt, Kim Whittaker, had nominated her for the recognition for her achievements as a teacher and basketball coach.
After watching a pre-recorded video featuring students and staff talking about Philpott’s impact, eight scholars plus Bronx Prep Assistant Principal Tracee Gonzalez, and 8th grade U.S. history teacher James Russell joined Philpott and Champion in the studio.
Asked how she felt being recognized by her scholars and staff, Philpott said: “I want to always make sure that I’m making an impact on the scholars and on the team—so they can leave impacts on others.”
The show’s producers had more surprises: a $10,000 gift from BJ’s Wholesale Club for the school, Skechers sneakers for the basketball players, and a paid vacation to Disneyland for Philpott and her family.
A devoted educator, Philpott spent time in the classroom as an associate teacher and ELA lead teacher before being promoted to assistant principal and then principal of Democracy Prep’s Bronx Prep.
She has also been known to say that her “favorite classroom has hardwood floors.” Not only does she coach two girls’ basketball teams at the school, she serves as head coach for all basketball teams, and runs a free, four-hour basketball clinic on Sundays in the Bronx.
Principal Philpott’s story is an example of leading with purpose—both in and outside of the classroom. Her recognition on Good Morning America reminds us of the commitment educators have in shaping the future of our scholars.
