Democracy Prep Charter School currently serves 300 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades. By the year 2012, our student body will grow to include over 600 students in grades 6-12. Democracy Prep is founded on the belief that a respectful, safe, and disciplined school community is essential to ensure dramatic academic gains for all students. We adhere to a "broken windows" approach to school discipline by treating even small disrespect seriously and a "tipping point" approach to school culture because we believe the little things make a big difference. Democracy Prep uses frequent academic assessments and communication with parents to ensure that our students receive the academic and behavioral support they need.
The motto of Democrcay Prep is "Work Hard. Go to College. Change the World!" Our teachers and scholars work incredibly hard each day, as they climb the mountain to college and begin to change the world. The hard work has allowed our scholars to grow an average of three grade levels in their first year and has earned Democracy Prep many honors, including being honored guests at Harvard University's 2008 commencement ceremonies, the league championship in boys' basketball and New York State Math results that outscore some of the most affluent areas.
