Democracy Prep Public Schools NYC is comprised of 12 high-performing college preparatory K-12 schools across East Harlem, Central Harlem, and the Bronx. We offer specialized programming and are committed to educating our highest need scholars who have IEP/ 504 plans and/or identify as English Language Learners. Our scholars graduate with an Advanced Regents diploma, a higher-level, more rigorous level of diploma that we have seen correlates with higher levels of college persistence. The exams specific to the Advanced Regents Diploma are some of the most rigorous exams that New York state offers, including Common Core Algebra 2, Korean LOTE, and Physics. At most NY schools, only the highest-achieving students take these exams, whereas at our high schools, we expect all of our students to take these exams, and the proficiency rates are still impressively high.
The deadline to be entered into the lottery for the 2020/21 school year is April 1, 2020! Applications after the deadline will still be accepted and automatically placed on our waiting list.
Please note that many students are called from our waiting list on an ongoing basis.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the application requirements?
To apply the parent/ guardian must be a resident of New York State. The scholar should be between the ages of 5-18 by December of the applying year. Please only apply once per scholar additional applications will be canceled.
How does the lottery work?
We are thrilled that so many families have shown interest in coming to Democracy Prep. Because we have so many interested applicants the admission process required by New York State law states that a lottery must be held if there are more student applications to a charter school than seats available. When a family applies for a seat at Democracy Prep Public Schools their applications get submitted into our applicant pool and lottery randomly draws from all applicants for admission. Your scholar’s application applies to all the schools in NYC for which we have the grade available. Please note that if you have a preferred location please do not cancel an undesired location application until after the lottery has occurred.
Does your lottery offer preferences?
We have two different preferences.
Sibling Preference is given to the sibling of a current/ newly admitted scholar who lives in the same household and/or shares the same legal guardian. This preference does not guarantee that the applying sibling will be offered a seat. The sibling must still apply for a seat at Democracy Prep.
District Preference is for students who reside in the Community School District in which the charter school is located. Our schools are located within Districts 4, 5, and 9.
How is the waitlist managed?
After the lottery is held scholars not initially drawn from the lottery are placed on the waitlist. When a seat becomes available at a school a family will be called in the order of the school’s waitlist. Our waitlist is based on the same preference criteria as our lottery. Our waitlist is constantly moving as families make the decision to admit their scholar into our schools, the siblings of newly admitted scholars advance within the waitlist. Not to mention, families can apply at any point during the enrollment season. If your scholar is not selected from the waitlist, unfortunately, the application does not “roll over” and you would have to reapply for the following school year.
