New York State law requires that children must have turned 5-years-old by December 1 of the year they are admitted to kindergarten. In other words, a child must have been born no later than November 31, 2014 to be eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year.
The deadline to be entered into the lottery for the 2019/20 school year is April 1, 2019! Applications will still be accepted and automatically placed on the waitlist thereafter.
We are thrilled that so many families have shown interest in attending Democracy Prep. Because family interest exceeds the number of seats we have available, New York State law requires that we hold a lottery. When a family applies for a seat at Democracy Prep Public Schools their application is submitted into our applicant pool. The lottery randomly selects the admission outcomes.
Quick Tip: Please do not apply multiple times. Multiple applications do not give families better odds of being selected.
Our lottery aims to increase a family’s chance of being able to attend Democracy Prep’s network of schools. So, when you apply for one grade, your application is entered for ALL Democracy Prep NYC schools in which we have the grade available.
Quick Tip: If you didn’t select a specific location on your application, don’t cancel it. Wait until you see the results of the lottery and can weigh your options. If the lottery matched your scholar to multiple schools, make a decision about the best campus for your family then.
New York State law requires that we offer the following preferences (in this order):
Siblings of existing Democracy Prep scholars
Siblings of incoming scholars siblings
Incoming scholars who reside in Community School District 4, 5, and 9 (where Democracy Prep schools are placed)
Preference is given to the sibling of a current/ newly admitted scholar who lives in the same household and/or shares the same legal guardian. Our hope is to keep siblings and families together but we are bound by the parameters of our school spaces. Qualifying for sibling preference does not guarantee that the applying sibling will be offered a seat. The Sibling must still apply for a seat at Democracy Prep.
At Democracy Prep we believe that there are many connections that make a family. However for the purpose of our lottery, scholars are considered siblings if they share a legal parent, foster parent or guardian.
As proof, we can accept:
Blood relation (evidenced by a valid birth certificate)
Legal adoption (evidenced by valid court documents)
Legal marriage (resulting in a step-child, evidenced by a valid marriage certificate)
Legal guardianship or foster parentage (evidenced valid court documents)
Scholars not drawn from the initial lottery are placed on the waitlist. When a seat is made available at a school, a family will be called in the order of the school’s waitlist.
Yes. Your waitlist number can move up or down. Here’s how:
Here’s an example:
Family B makes a decision to come to Democracy Prep. Waitlisted Family C’s number may move up.
Here’s another example:
Family D’s make a decision to come to Democracy Prep. As per our lottery preference, the siblings of the newly admitted scholar will also advance within the waitlist. Waitlisted Family E’s number may move down.
Your scholar’s application stays on the waitlist for the duration of the enrollment cycle. The enrollment cycle is from November 1 of the current academic year to October 31 of the following one.
Absolutely! Although the enrollment cycle ‘ends’ in October, as long as we have space for new scholars, we welcome them with open arms, no matter the time of year!
Yes. Applications do not roll over. If you’d like to receive notice that our new application is available, please sign up above.
